A VISIT TO THE OLDEST TEMPLE IN TOKYO

Japan is replete with a lot of beautiful temples which mostly have Buddhist origin. Shintoism and Buddhism are the dominant religions in Japan even though they don’t overtly practice these religions from my observation.

One of the beautiful temples I’ve visited in Japan is the Sensoji temple in Asakusa Tokyo. Sensoji Temple is the oldest Buddhist temple in Tokyo.

Legend has it that in the year 628, two brothers fished a statue of Kannon, the goddess of mercy, out of the Sumida River in Tokyo. Even though they put the statue back into the river, it always returned to them. Consequently, Sensoji was built nearby for the goddess of Kannon. The temple was completed in 645, making it Tokyo‘s oldest temple.
